This bathroom was 6 months of planning and a lot of back and forth with the layout and finishes. Don’t be fooled by their size, bathrooms are, or can be, very expensive to update. The builder grade finishes are the cheapest thing the builder could buy, and they can get you by, but they are not going to be the best looking or functioning. This bathroom needed to be remodeled because the homeowner has Parkinson’s and may end up wheelchair bound. So we decided to make this bathroom as accessible as possible. We started by almost doubling the size of the shower and adding a linear drain for a curb-less entry. The shower valve on the outside wall allows you to leave the temperature at the same setting all the time, and all you have to do is turn the lever and the water will come on and warm up for you, to your favorite setting. No more mixing hot and cold to find the right spot! This also allows you not have to roll in and get sprayed with freezing water, and have to back out in your wheelchair soaking wet. We then added heated flooring. This is a must for any master bathroom. It is easy to say “I don’t need my feet to be warm, I’ve gone this long without it”, but then you try it for the first time and wonder how you lived this long WITHOUT IT. The smart thermostat is WiFi compatible and programmable as well. Lighting will make or break a project. The homeowners did an excellent job picking their lighting, and the chandelier fits the space so well. They also opted for the “RunCon special” LED/motion lights. These lights are under the vanities and come on by simply walking in the room. Providing just enough light for the late night trips to the potty so you don’t have to be blinded. The tub. We found a way to get him his shower and her her soaking tub. The beautiful grab bars provide the support needed to access the tub in its own little nook. Didn’t think we’d be able to make it fit, but I think it adds just enough “curve appeal” to the contemporary straight lines. These homeowners would agree. Each day is a spa visit for them… Who’s next?
